Carter Mountain

We traveled west most summers
Mom, Dad, Vinny, Jes, and I
It seemed so never-ending
A grueling two day drive
But once we got to Cody
That's where the fun began
Poppie, Gramie and the horses
A thrill for this young man
And we'd go up to Carter Mountain
Way up high amongst the pines
We'd run wild on Carter Mountain
Just below the timberline
Saturday's it was the rodeo
Where Jes hoped to meet her beau
We'd sit up in the buzzards roost
With her heart aglow
And then there were the oil fields
Where we would learn to shoot
Then back to feed the horses
Vinny kicked horseshit with his boots
Then we'd go up to Carter Mountain
Way up high amongst the pines
We'd run wild on Carter Mountain
Just below the timberline
Poppie'd take his boat to Yellowstone
Or to the reservoir
That's where he taught us how to fish
And oh there's so much more
The stories that he told us
Passed down as true folklore
Will never be forgotten
In our hearts forevermore
Carter sits on the Southeast Absaroka Range
Which is 30 miles long
And she overlooks the South Fork
Of the hundred mile Shoshone
One last time we'll load that pickup
And roll those windows down
And head straight down that South Fork
Carter Mountain bound
Now we are up on Carter Mountain
Way up high amongst the pines
Yes, we've come to Carter Mountain
To say our last goodbyes
And here they are on Carter Mountain
Spirits dancing in the sky
Way up here on Carter Mountain
Where their souls forever fly
Where their souls forever fly
