Still Free, My Country

You can mix all colors and most people just won't mind
Tell 'em it's all good and they'll be color-blind
But others take 'em to the well of ignorance and hate
Where torrents of sermons wash 'em to the pearly gates

No use thinking your thoughts, their prayer's sinking in
The fight's on for the gate and you can't let others win
You're robbed of understanding 'cause you're running out of time
Dark thoughts are evil and seeing red's a crime

But when I wake in the heart of my city
I get up and take a step, one step at a time
I will sail down the river of my country
Take a chance, and make it mine

The words of enlightened men can help free those who want teaching
But they were never meant to build armies of hateful preaching
Change'll never happen 'cause we're stuck in a groove
The only way out of a bad dream is to wake up and move

When lies take hold, upstanding folks fall behind
One-eyed power hounds are making us all blind
If greed were fashion, they'd all be Christian Dior
We've drifted far from the woods of Pooh and Eeyore

But when I wake in the bed of my city
I get up and take a step, one step at a time
I will sail down the river of my country
Take a dream, and make it mine

Beliefs have become more real than reality can be
Small step for man, a stab through the heart of humanity
The circle's closing in, the crowd's cheering for a fight
Thinking they can win when in fact we're headed into the night

You can keep your religion, please keep your anthem
The road to hell is paved with them
I'll just keep on loving who and doing what I please
Never mind your guilt, hatred and decrees

Now when I wake in the bed of my city
I get up and take a step, one step at a time
I will sail down the river of my country
Take the world, and make it all mine
