The Dreary Autumn Rain

She'd awake me at the sound of the sun
Burning through the morning dew
She'd awake me at the sound of the sun
With summer still so bright and new
And no sign that it would end

I'd rescue her from herself and thought
I hid her well from those who've gone
But their impressions still remained and so
I avoided any mention of
The dreary autumn rain

Our happiness I took for granted
So easy were those safe connected days
All along I should have known
The weather, it could change
I lost her and the love we knew
I lost her to
The dreary autumn rain

Together we fell apart
At the first stormy sky
Did she not care or not realize
That again one day the sun could shine

I awoke to the sound of the rain
Slapping fallen shriveled leaves
I awoke to the sound of the rain
Alone and forced them to believe
That my love had met the end

She was gone right on time
Repeating history had her name
A guiltful grief shall forever with me though remain
Was there anything I might have done
To save her from
The dreary autumn rain
