Salt

The salt that hurts the most
Stings at it soaks

The blood from staining clothes
Washed and disposed

So we're stuck in the middle
Of some cycle pulling ropes
And spinning the gear
So you see my fear

The mechanism runs
But I should have known
It's not for lack of rust
That we're washing the salt

And it should have been easy
To convince myself to stay
Add up the change
If you feel displaced

It's so early
But what do you say?
The nautical miles feel longer every day

I could be wrong but
As you're starting to sway
It's the manner and timing
Or it's timing's maddening way

It's so early
But what can I say
I can feel you pulling tide but I
Don't blame you for the waves

Tomorrow
Decide if you'll stay
Until then we're going swimming till
The callous peels away
