Marathon

Call it a dare, a bet, or some thin-veiled attempt to keep us young
I've heard a lot of words try to describe The Decathlon
Faced with the prospect of a double-dose of hot sauce, then I chose
To strap on my big-boy socks and complete a Marathon
No chance I'm running the good Lord built me to chase my dreams indoors
With these long legs that keep my back straight with my feet flat on the floor
On pizza-walks that I'd pretend counted as training, that was when
I felt the strangest confidence like I had done this all before

'Cause I've been walking my whole life
Grinding on that nine to five
I'm billing eight, but working nine
'Cause I can't help but take my time
I'm only running down those dreams
No those doubts they can't catch me
I'm waking up before the sun
So that I don't have to rush
'Cause I'm not chasing down Friday
I'm just strolling with Tuesday
If it's true that this life's a Marathon
I think I'm gonna walk this one

My Father said, "Son, take your time. Slow it down and do it right
No one cares how smart you are if they can't read anything you write"
So I took those words to heart - the calmest kid right from the start
I lived like a computer with one meg of RAM but with disk space off the charts
My board game friends will testify "Matt Turns" feel like waiting in line
Yeah, my opponent's chess clock's always had more time on theirs than mine
When I bring up the Marathon most people tend to lose their minds
"At this rate you'll have to train for thirty years". But I'll be fine

'Cause I've been walking my whole life
Grinding on that nine to five
I'm billing eight, but working nine
'Cause I can't help but take my time
I'm only running down those dreams
No those doubts they can't catch me
I'm waking up before the sun
So that I don't have to rush
'Cause I'm not chasing down Friday
I'm just strolling with Tuesday
If it's true that this life's a Marathon
I think I'm gonna walk this one
I think I'm gonna walk this one

I think I'm gonna walk this one like I've walked everything
If you're sick of stressing, you want to join me - feel free!
Yeah we'll be chillin' out, maxin' in the back of the pack
Because nice guys finish last

This Christian race I chose is the only run I've ever known
It's uphill climbing finding hearts don't change, at least not on their own
I'm hoping if I share some love and someday when they're tired of running
If they want to talk about this walk that I might be the one

'Cause I've been walking my whole life
Grinding on that nine to five (A.K.A. seven to five)
I'm billing eight, but working nine
'Cause I can't help but take my time (Take my time)
I'm only running down those dreams
No those doubts they can't catch me (Yeah, I'm waking up)
I'm waking up before the sun
So that I don't have to rush (Don't have to rush)
'Cause I'm not chasing down Friday
I'm just strolling with Tuesday (Strollin'!)
If it's true that this life's a Marathon
I think I'm gonna walk this one
I think I'm gonna walk this one
I think I'm gonna walk this - Yeah!
