Beech Tree

Followed a path into the woods
My friend and I ran as fast as we could
Throwing sticks and stones and leaves
Dancing in-between the trees

The path ran out before a beech
Our innocence now out of reach
Her lips so blue and skin so pale
Swaying from a branch so frail

The smell of death hangs in the air
In some trance can't help but stare
Beyond all hope, beyond repair
Beyond our childish, helpless prayer

She looked just like my mother young
Dark and soft her brown hair hung
The angel's blood it struck the roots
And scattered on the springtime shoots

Years from that dreadful scene
We'd never speak of what we'd seen
But every-time I close my eyes
I see the flashing lights go by
The sirens ring out through the trees
Carried on the evening breeze
To forget that face is all I crave
We'll take it deep inside our graves

So young
Oh so young
So young
