In Dreams

Once I told a friend about a dream and she explained
Dreaming of someone is really meeting on another plane
Well in those dreams I'm all grown up but you still look the same
And there's a funny timbre to the way you say my name

I'm haunted by the faces that I used to picture when I thought of home
In my dreams I can pretend that I'm your little girl again
Instead of just someone you used to know

I was watching an old movie
It was all in black and white
Suddenly I realized the leading man had your blue eyes
Crocodile tears began to rain down from the sky
They soaked me to the bone
You remained completely dry

You're here and then you're gone again
You always make off in the afterglow
Morning comes and I don't bother with the tea leaves anymore
Now I'm just someone you used to know

You said "dance with me"
I don't know the choreography
Oh the things that I would do to be
Privy to your plans

Our repartee
I can't tell if you are mocking me
You are laughing at the irony
That I don't understand

I know how to make risotto
I know how to drive in snow
Make a good impression
Leave 'em laughing when I go
I'm a poet
I'm a painter
I'm a modest English rose
But after all is said and done
I'm just someone you used to know
