Marigold

Together we build canopies of trust
The redwoods were not enough
In California fires start to burn
We're rubbed down to the wire saving all that we nurtured

And you let go of me
Oh I was so happy
Together we trimmed forests down to groves
And it was beautiful I thought
When we let go

The grove was weak the blight was strong that year
In just a single week all of the trees would disappear
You brandished your great axe before our cause
And leveled branch and bramble till the breath had left your lungs

And then you'd start to sing
Of hate and mutiny
As you journey unknowns with your eyes closed
And if my heart is so cold

Hey you're angry
Please just talk to me
Now I'm angry
You're too afraid to try

You're too afraid to try (I'm angry)
Now I'm angry (You're too afraid to try)
You're too afraid to try

And you let go of me
Oh I was so happy
Alone I would watch stumps turn to rot
And the marigold that bloomed
Gave me hope you could not
