Piano Strings

Somewhere, summers under starlight
We'd spend the night awash in moonlight
In some soft canopy bed we would sleep
At 3 AM I'd watch you breathe

You were mine and I was yours
At least, in my head, so the story would go
It would be nothing but inevitable
In these long autumn streets we would echo and echo

From somewhere in the house, a piano rings

She came to us in a billow of white
A quiet and transparent sight
That drifted slowly out of the gloom
Into what we'd called our room

We grew up together, the three of us
Us and the piano, the one thing she still could touch
Deep in the night her serenades
Would float through the halls 'til break of day

All throughout the house, the piano rings

Each glance you two shared was a twist of the knife
Each time that I watched you breathe at night
Was another reminder that there never was an "us"
Your lips filled up with someone else's love

Oh, how could you have left me there?
You took the train for the thin, thin air
I woke with my head on a silent chest
I wasn't awake for your dying breath

You strangled in the night in piano strings
