Girl from the Cornfields

Right from the start her Pa didn't like him
He said he, said he was a low-down bum
Her Pa said Roy was way too old for her
And she was, she was just much too young

Roy started comin' round the farm
Being way too nice
She kinda liked him
But she didn't trust his eyes

One scorching summer day Roy drove up to the farm
She was sittin' on the porch to get out of the sun
He stepped up on the stairs and looked her up and down
She saw his look and she started to run

He grabbed her by the arm and dragged her
screamin' behind the barn
Her heart was beatin' right outta her chest
Thinkin' there was no one around

He took her where no man should ever take a girl
What he did would shatter her whole world
But what he didn't count on would lead him to his doom
Her Pa came round the corner just a bit too soon

Chickens fled through the farmyard
Feathers flyin', flyin' in the hot dusty air
Her Pa knocked Roy down and they started to struggle
Rollin' on the ground, throwin' punches, kickin' up rubble

She was hunched down by the hickory tree
Not knowing what to do
Caught sight of a glint of metal
Stickin' outta one of Roy's boots

As she reached out, and she grabbed his gun
Oh something deep, deep inside her changed
She knew exactly what she had to do
To stop, to stop this violent rage

Backin' up against the barn
She locked her arms out straight
Narrowed her eyes, aimed down the barrel
And shot that gun like her Pa taught her
And shot that gun like her Pa taught her
Oh the shot that echoed through the cornfields
Could be heard, could be heard for miles around
A red rose bloomed upon Roy's soaked shirt
As he sank down, sank down to the ground

The wail that issued from her mouth
Cracked the summer sky
A howl of anguish and relief
Was her warrior cry

Her Pa staggered up, he held her close
Their blood, their blood ran so deep
They knew they each, each had saved a life
It was, it was their bond to keep

For he took her where no man should ever take a girl
What he did had shattered her whole world
But what he didn't count on had led him to his doom
Her Pa came round the corner just a bit too soon
Her Pa came round the corner just a bit too soon
