You Don't Need a Mirror

Who am I when no one's watching?
I scroll through lies and I'm so lost in
My body's mistakes for influence' sake
Will anybody notice me?
Who am I when I'm not posting?
A Photoshop game of who's like the most and
I'll never look right in society's eyes
When the mirror is all they see

Look, I'm not saying that I think you shouldn't pay attention
Every time a passer-by in the street might mention
The curls in your hair or the brown of your eyes
Your dress looks lovely and your shoes are so nice
And the thing is yeah, that might be true
But that doesn't mean you should let it define you
And don't you think it's weird that we're teaching our kids
What appears on the outside matters more than within?
And if a stranger can't see that, they shouldn't say a thing
A child shouldn't be thinking
About their looks or what they're wearing
Do we want another generation crippled by fear
That they don't look right, they don't adhere
To our fabricated standards of aesthetic perfection
Setting them up for a life of rejection
So instead of their looks, I think we should consider
The message we preach is, you don't need a mirror

Who am I when no one's watching?
I scroll through lies and I'm so lost in
My body's mistakes for influence' sake
Will anybody notice me?
Who am I when I'm not posting?
A Photoshop game of who's like the most and
I'll never look right in society's eyes
When the mirror is all they see

Your beauty's so much more than your outward appearance
It's your acts of love which are a daily occurrence
As the saying goes "beauty's more than skin deep"
Your personality that makes you unique
Not the way you dress or the way you smile
It's the act of the smile that defines the child
The kindness, the jokes, the caring heart
That's the individuality that sets you apart
And while it's ok to want to look nice
Something like that doesn't have to rule your life
All the real stuff that makes you special
Is underneath your skin, and that's instrumental
To focus on that, on what's inside
Not superficial excellence that's based on lies
So instead of their looks, I think we should consider
The message we preach is you don't need a mirror

Who am I when no one's watching?
I scroll through lies and I'm so lost in
My body's mistakes for influence' sake
Will anybody notice me?
Who am I when I'm not posting?
A Photoshop game of who's like the most and
I'll never look right in society's eyes
When the mirror is all they see

Who am I when no one's watching?
I scroll through lies and I'm so lost in
My body's mistakes for influence' sake
Will anybody notice me?
Who am I when I'm not posting?
A Photoshop game of who's like the most and
I'll never look right in society's eyes
When the mirror is all they see
