Penelope Graves

The faintest star slips out of sight
Though she won't go quietly into the night
And breaks from her course, intending to fall
And runs 'cross the sea, by the earth she's been called
She dashed toward the shore in the dark of new moon
The sand is the alter, the land is her groom
But alas when her feet came to meet the dry ground
A jilting betrayal as her heels settled down

And her name
Drifted away
When she was tamed
And so she became
Penelope Graves

The rocks gashed like razors, grass cut like knives
Her uncovered feet were draining her life
So she stole from her wings the silk for a pair
Of slippers to cover her skin bruised and bare
She walked among wonders a star never could
But the shoes tore like bandages covered in blood
In agony crippled, accursed in a field
She wept like a sparrow who's wings wouldn't heal

And her name
Drifted away
When she was tamed
And so she became
Penelope Graves

Hearing her cries
A man raced to her side
In awe of this star
A heartbreak sublime
Wingless and hopeless
He brought her a gift
The strength in his arms
And the spirit to lift
Her up

She forfeit her wings and gained a groom
But where can she stand when the earth is her doom
So her new lover covered her soles with a pair
Of leather and stitches with laces to wear

And her name
Drifted away
When she was tamed
And so she became
Penelope Graves
Drifted away
When she was tamed
And so she became
Penelope Graves

Drifted away
When she was tamed
And so she became
Penelope Graves
Drifted away
When she was tamed
And so she became
Penelope
