Laker

I walked down the steps in darkness towards the lake
And I saw two figures in the water
And, lit by stars above, I saw her shake
And I saw his hand upon her shoulder

I looked away, I couldn't say
If he'd pull her to his side or push her under
I closed my eyes, thought I heard sighs
And I thought I heard the distant peal of thunder
And when I turned my eyes back towards the water
The ripples' slow expanse was all I saw there

The darkness made it difficult to know
If they floundered or they fought there in the night-time
Was his hand on her to push her down?
Or was he grasping wildly for a lifeline?
Because he could just as easily get drowned
The water's blackness everywhere around him
She could just as easily turn round
And leave him by the lake there where she found him

I looked away, I couldn't say
If he'd pull her to his side or push her under
I closed my eyes, thought I heard sighs
And I thought I heard the distant peal of thunder
And when I turned my eyes back towards the water
The ripples' slow expanse was all I saw there
And so I turned and made my way home blindly
And all the while felt footsteps fall behind me
