Scarecrow

Warmer skies promise to
Tell me my future
The clouds race ahead
And the mist slips through my fingers

Here in the light of this
Leftover sun
Your memory takes my hand and to
Eternity we run

Over these fields in which I've
Sowed all my secrets
Tend to this garden
I pray to God I'll keep it

There in the distance
Beyond the long-shadowed scarecrow
Birds peck half-buried seeds
It's no wonder nothing grows

Oh, they ask me where the time goes
But I don't know
I spend it in the meadows

I feel you here in heart and
Spirit, and if I listen through
The wind, your voice I swear
I almost hear it

In dried-up grass
The remnants of your laugh
Takes its place among the fallen
But spring is coming, I can taste the pollen

And every year this season's depression
Burrows deep within my chest
But winter changes just like
All the rest
