Wild Rose

A farmer goes to work 'til he's tired
Stops to doze off in the hay
Sleeps on site
And dreams through the night
'Til he wakes up to work again

There's one horse town cops
And corner tattoos
Old hobos wave from box cars
Now dontcha get out of that snowstorm
Come in where it's warm
Sit down and dry your hide

Shadows cast on the mountain tops
As the sun sets beyond the trees
Wilted wildflowers bend into themselves
As the ground beneath starts to freeze

There's muleys in the coulees
Old hawks on a fence post
The merry-go-round grazes on crude
Come on down
Where the sky paints the ground
And the wind blows across the plains

I thought about old Wildrose
And the gal I left behind
When I stopped in to a diner for a bite
I told the waitress she's pretty
That don't mean a thing
I'm still sleepin' by the fire tonight

My mind fades off to nowhere
As the crackle and smoke cloud the moon
I tip my hat
And nod off the somewhere
While the farmer is nodding off too
