A Winter Solace

Gulping down sweet tea at the kitchen table
We chomped on hot dogs and pickles
Anxiously awaiting our escape
A hasty clean-up, pardon granted
And out the back door we would fly
In that peculiar orange glow
Time seems magically suspended
And I dream of the far-off lands in my story books
But my sisters beckon me
And I become a hopscotch warrior
Dazzling the crowd with my footwork
And cleverly avoiding capture
Then, inevitably, the golden sunlight disappears
Smothering her courage with encroaching darkness
The little girl who yearns for a soothing embrace
Stands at the door
Dutifully grasping the mayonnaise jar
Thrust into her small hands
Her feet tread thick dewy grass
As she mechanically captures flying bits of light
Knowing that by morning
