Water of Life

There sits a picture book on my childhood bedroom shelf
It's about three brothers on a quest
To cure their ailing father, he's a king or something, I don't remember
But I thought of you, you said you're searching too

You who's got your Ford in fifth gear
Screaming words you know I won't hear
Betting on the saloon closing down
You talk just to hide all the maps in the glovebox
I've seen the marks, I know you're getting out

So if you find the water of life
I'll cup it in my hands and hold it to the light
And when you leave I'll store it and I'll keep
A portion for our friends
They're stationed 'round the bend

You'll probably encounter several cowboys on your way there
Or hustlers in neon bars and hats
Did I say where? I'm not sure but I've conjured many pictures
Marathon or Idaho or Rome

If you find the water of life
I'll cup it in my hands and hold it to the light
And when you leave I'll store it and I'll keep
A portion for our friends
They're stationed 'round the bend

I'm sure you'll find the water of life
And carry on for miles
You won't need my advice
And I'll tell all our friends that I don't mind
I'll make up several stories, say I'm meeting you at some point
That's what I'm best at, and nothing else, in fact
