Silverlake Reservoir

I was homesick for the flatness of Illinois
So I left my glass full at Little Joy
Walked down Sunset to the Reservoir
To circle round it like a drain

I laid down on a mattress I came upon
That someone had left out on their lawn
I looked up at God and said there you are
I've been searching for you for days

Well I understand why you're late
You gotta come a long way
We're so far here from Heaven's gate
Despite the weather and the name

I walked past a couple of movie stars
Walking with their strollers and their little dogs
I said I loved their movies and they said thanks a lot
It made me feel pretty good

Cause there's something about celebrities
That makes us all a little crazy
We just want to believe
In a dream so fulfilled

And I watched the people sit in their cars
Staring at their windshields like a piece of art
Looking at the homeless man push his cart
I saw the kinship in them all
I felt a kinship with them all

And I sat with a stranger at the dog park
We must have been there a couple hours
When we got asked which dog was ours
We just laughed and said we just met

Love likes to hide beside us
In plain sight and inside of us
The reservoir is bottomless
And the water is clear
The water is clear
