Sunday Mourning

Sunday morning
Put on your lace-topped socks
Tie up your curly locks
Slip on your Mary Janes
Don't want to look too vain

At 8 o'clock
Hear the church bells chime
The choir sings in time
We are told to repent
And people are obedient for 45 minutes

You claim you're a saint
But all your prayers are just complaints
Who am I judge
When I am guilty of the same

It's a stained glass, dome shaped masquerade
Where the "holy family" is on parade
In the beloved, dust-covered book called the Bible
Lessons learned from the chosen and the vile

It's a dark past, home shaped picture frame
Of a family, smiling to hide their shame
It's the black and blue, teary-eyed face of a child
The reality is seen beneath the denial

Sunday mourning
Hear the parent's scream
Children listening
Cover-up your blue
Deny what you've been through

At 8 o'clock
Hear the church bells ring
The rattle and cha-ching
The money that you pay
That is how you'll earn your way

We stand before a man of age
Who cascades around his stage
Decorated in gold or bronze
But he preaches that greed is wrong

It's a stained glass, dome shaped masquerade
Where the "holy family" is on parade
In the beloved, dust-covered book called the Bible
Lessons learned from the chosen and the vile

It's a dark past, home shaped picture frame
Of a family, smiling to hide their shame
It's the black and blue, teary-eyed face of a child
The reality is seen beneath the denial

So share a drink with me
Does your faith come for free
Oh, are you just afraid
Of what happens when you don't pray
So make a toast to thee
Does your love cover me
Oh if I'm so un-heavenly
What do you want from me
What do you want from me

It's a stained glass, dome shaped masquerade
Where the "holy family" is on parade
In the beloved, dust-covered book called the Bible
Learn how to sacrifice for your survival

It's a dark past, home shaped picture frame
Of a family, smiling to hide their shame
It's the black and blue, teary-eyed face of a child
The reality is seen beneath the denial
