Elegy

Ran into an old man shufflin' down the street
He asked me, "Son, hey, what are you smilin' for?"
I said, "I don't know; I guess things are goin' good for me
I got all I want; don't need nothin' more

He said what he wants is what I don't know I got
But it's somethin' that he can't have again
I stood there for a moment, then I dropped into his thought
And I said, "Yeah, I think I understand."

Oh, we ain't gettin' any younger
I realize that ain't no big surprise
Oh, but you know I have to stop and wonder
Can you see it in my eyes?

It's not the boyhood home that the old man misses
It's boyhood, that's what it is
He knows that a town must go through changes
And old men must reminisce

It's not the places I've been that I long for, baby
It's good times there that I miss
And returnin' with clear expectations
Brings a vague emptiness

Oh, we ain't gettin' any younger
I realize that ain't no big surprise
Oh, but you know I have to stop and wonder
Can you see it in my eyes?

We swim through life like salmon up river
Fightin' up every fall
Then we turn and look through our weary eyes
Tryin' to get back to it all

I stare out at a sea of young kids waitin' on their day
I wonder is there somethin' that I've lost
I guess the innocence of youth just has to run away
And the bridge is burned before we know we've crossed

Oh, we ain't gettin' any younger
I realize that ain't no big surprise
Oh, but you know I have to stop and wonder
Can you see it in my eyes?
Can you see it in my eyes?
Can you see it in my eyes?

We swim through life like salmon up river
Fightin' up every fall
Then we turn and look through our weary eyes
Tryin' to get back to it all

Oh, we ain't getting any younger
I realize that ain't no big surprise
But oh, you know I have to stop and wonder
Can you see it in my eyes?
Can you see it in my eyes?
Can you see it in my eyes?
