Layers

I wake up in your bed, my legs and arms around you
In sunlit tangled sheets that both of us have sweated through
Half remembered innocence, tenderness, blissfulness
I never thought that we would be together again like this
But we circle round like repertory players
I never want to climb back up through all the layers
Even before I'm sitting up and getting out of bed
You've already turned away, your hair a mess around your head
Your face in the pillow, our clothes mixed up on the floor
I can't seem to see your eyes anymore
The cool of our skin, watching the city expanse
Or standing together in the club afraid to dance
(solo)
That sad hole in your carpet pains me
But your timeless beauty chains me to you
I stand and look around - the ceiling's not there anymore
Now we hold hands driving, driving to the shore
Every time I think this time it will be the last
We keep on trying to live and relive the past
The heat of our skin, watching the city expanse
Standing together in the street afraid to dance
