Birth of Blues
Midnight in the heart of the southland
Red moon is looking down from above
Stands a house in the middle of nowhere
On the corner of broke and unloved
A woman crying, you could hear it in town
She gave birth to a boy all alone
He took everything in her with him
Looks like the Lord called her home
A man come to see what had happened
Saw that boy on the killing floor
Picked him up and said "Don't you worry
You don't have to be cold no more"
Said "You need a name, how's Blues?
Must have them after what you've gone through"
That boy looked the man in the eyes
And said "I concur, how do you do?"
Man said he'd never seen nothing like it
Took him home to show his wife
When he got there everything was different
All the boy could do was cry and cry
Years later Blues is fishing with a cane pole
Out there in the Delta heat
Then God come down from above and said
"Blues, you better listen to me
He was born to be a picker in a string band
Ain't like no one before
Better learn to bend them strings, son
With that hurt in your soul"
Oh it'll hurt in your soul
It'll hurt in your soul
Red moon is looking down from above
Stands a house in the middle of nowhere
On the corner of broke and unloved
A woman crying, you could hear it in town
She gave birth to a boy all alone
He took everything in her with him
Looks like the Lord called her home
A man come to see what had happened
Saw that boy on the killing floor
Picked him up and said "Don't you worry
You don't have to be cold no more"
Said "You need a name, how's Blues?
Must have them after what you've gone through"
That boy looked the man in the eyes
And said "I concur, how do you do?"
Man said he'd never seen nothing like it
Took him home to show his wife
When he got there everything was different
All the boy could do was cry and cry
Years later Blues is fishing with a cane pole
Out there in the Delta heat
Then God come down from above and said
"Blues, you better listen to me
He was born to be a picker in a string band
Ain't like no one before
Better learn to bend them strings, son
With that hurt in your soul"
Oh it'll hurt in your soul
It'll hurt in your soul
