Airplane Effect

Of course I'm going home for the holidays
Isn't that what people do these days
Book a flight
Pack too light
Run out of clothes in the cold

Can I get a ride to the airport
I'd call a taxi but I can't afford it
And besides
It might be nice
Coffee over traffic with a hand to hold

Might be the last time I see you anyway
But if I do who knows how we'll play

I'm looking through the seatback pocket
And all that's there is safety comics
Shouldn't feel this catastrophic
But I know what comes next
Distract me from the fact that you might
Not be there when I get back
I can't unpack
My heart's too big to check
Call it drifting apart or the Airplane Effect

It always happens in the same way
I tie my shoes in a new place
I come home and something's changed
She never called me back

Hoping this time I'll turn a new page
A smooth landing and an easy gate
You'll pick me up
Where we left off
Things stay right on track
