Refugee

I've been keeping my head out of the water
Floating out to sea
Stars are smiling, waves remind me of rocking, dreaming
On my sister's knee
But I can't hold on much longer

On a boat for ten we were forty two
Lost and drifting low
All around us the storm was raging, the sails were shredded
Land our only hope

I saw my family always hungry
My people dying by degrees
I had a vision of a new world
Any place we could be free

When morning broke we sighted shore
Sliding slowly by
I had to swim to bring them in
For their lives a sacrifice
In their eyes I see surrender

I could hear my wife and brothers crying
As I jumped into the sea
Swimming hard in the icy water, the ocean stronger
Swept me to the east

My body numb I'll float forever
The stars are dancing in my eyes
Out of the night a light surrounds me
And lifts me to my new home in the sky
