The Giraffe

You can see the Big Dipper from anywhere in North America
If you can only recognize one group of stars, this is the one
It's even better known than the three stars that make up Orion's belt
You will see the Big Dipper if you see any stars at all tonight

See the two stars on the side of the Dipper where the water would pour out
The one at the base, and the one at the brim where the water would pour out
Imagine a straight line extending the side of the Dipper five times its original length
This will lead you to the North Star

Take some time to notice the North Star
As you know, all the stars appear to rotate around the North Star
This is an illusion, oh but it's such a useful illusion, we might as well stay under its spell
We might as well, we might as well, if only for tonight

And on the other side of the North Star
About as far away as the Big Dipper sits Casseopeia
Depending on how the stars are turned she may look like an M or a W or a sigma
Turn your head until she looks like a W

And to the left of the W where some previous letter might go
You will find the two stars that mark the feet of the Giraffe
Well, you might, but you probably won't
The Giraffe is very, very faint
The Giraffe is one of the faintest constellations in the sky

If the clouds are out you won't see it
If the moon is bright you won't see it
If there's any light interefering from any nearby town
Or any pollution interfering from any nearby town
You won't see it, you won't see it
You won't see it at all
You won't see it, you won't see it
You won't see it at all
