Rain in the Summer

How beautiful is the rain
Peppering the narrow lane
After the dust and weary heat
The smiles are free along the street

How it clatters on the roof
Like a tramp of hoofs
How it gushes and rushes out
The throat of a gutter spout

Dark clouds rumbling, children running, umbrellas do fly
Celebrating, lovers mating, windows hide the shy

Dashing cars electrify
Their crossings soon deny
The right of way for the high boot maam
Each splash will curse the labored tramp

Refuge in the coffee stand
The croissant wasn't planned
But the Wise Monkey coffee leaf tea
Was a pleasure for Mabel and me
