When Eating a Wolf

the village is empty of horse meat
serpent soup
and empathy
rat mash
and octopus salad
we're boiling cardboard
for the kids

they say
someone ate a stranger
who was passing through
and now we're so hungry
hungry
for you

we're eating the wolf
the dogs ate the dogs
we're eating the wolf

bulging eyes
in homemade coffins
pigs with lipstick
and cat flesh fiends
even darkness
could light up the way now
we're gluing leaves
unto the trees

they say
someone ate a stranger
made shoes of human skin
what should we serve
when death comes walking in

we're serving the wolf
the dogs ate the dogs

we're eating the wolf
