The Ascending Ladder

Oh Lord, sweet Lord, in Your grace I was made
For all of Your glory each morning I've prayed
On the earth I was birthed, in Your heart I was raised
And I sing unto Thee with praise

But Lord, I am man, and I cannot yet see
What reason You gifted such sorrow to me
You have given so much, but taken much more
Please forgive me when I wonder what for

In my day's doubtful hour, I beg You to see
That my whole heart and soul is devoted to Thee
And in late lonely night when with sorrow I'm full
Teach trust, Lord, that it's I that you cull

Blessed He who is Lord who shall never revoke
Plague, heroin, grief, heart attack, epilepsy, and stroke
For all of His riches, divine from above
Are a gift He has given with love

Oh Lord, when I die, I shall rise up to Thee
I shall feast at the banquet that You've laid out for me
I shall find my seat 'side Your golden throne
And gouge out your eyes with a turkey bone

Oh Lord, you damn fool, can't you see by my face
That I've spent my whole life climbing up to this place?
For I knew in my wisdom you'd show me the way
And we'd meet again some day
