Umbrella Lady

Out there in the rain
In an umbrella castle with a cup for your change
She's sitting all day
With the holes in her boots and a sign to explain

Dad was a solider
Long had since flown
Mum couldn't handle
Four kids alone
That's all I read
I walked away
I tell myself none of it's true
Anyway

What use is a smile
When your next bite to eat comes from pockets of passers-by
But better ones than I
Clutching three pounds of guilt
In my pocket I pass her by

Whispering hoarsely
Pleading for change
Barely could hear her
Over the rain
I cannot help you
I hear myself say
Umbrella Lady
Can't you fly?
Won't you fly?
Can't you just fly away?
