In a frozen room with florescent lights
A boy is sprawled out on the ice
His dreams of playing in the NHL
Melt away as all his friends play well
With jaw clenched tight and stick in hand
He holds back tears and starts to stand
Looks to his Mom and lets out a sigh,
"Don't know if I can but I'm gonna try"

In a crowded room with broken lights
A woman was sharing her whole life
Her dreams of being the greatest mom
Both got taken away once the cops got called
She's lived in the shadows of older men
Who've given her meth since she was ten
She tells the group as she starts to cry,
"Don't know if I can but I'm gonna try"

"I'll try to learn what I don't know
And find the hope I lost long ago
Some walls and mountains can't be climbed
But I'll never know until I try"

Eighteen years of daily use
Helped her survive daily abuse
Then she got the help she always wanted
And began to build a life she'd started
Her oldest two are in good homes
She sees them every year or so
And today she gets to enjoy
Being at the rink with her little boy
Who just got up from off the ice
Cause his mom's been teaching him to try
