You Can't Hold Me Back

When I was a kid the world was changing
Not everything was perfect, to say the least
People had to choose a stance
Stay in the dark, or take the chance
To stand up and defend
What they believed

I met my best friend in second grade
Did everything together from that day
It barely even crossed my mind
That his face didn't look like mine
We had things to do
And games to play

But we ran headlong into a raging fire
Some older kids beat my friend to the ground
We fought like hell to get away
And as my friend wiped the blood
He shook his fist at them and he said

You can't hold me back from being someone
You can't bind my passion up in chains
The winds of change are blowing hot
And nothing in this world will stop
Me living life with everything I've got

Things were never easy for my friend
We stuck together and we made it through
And though we have so far to go
We're getting closer every day
To finding our way
To a better place

And just the other day I stood
Beside him as his bride he took
And in my mind
I could hear him say

You can't hold me back from being someone
You can't bind my passion up in chains
The winds of change are blowing hot
And nothing in this world will stop
Me living life with everything I've got
