Daffodils

How do the daffodils smile up at me
Their yellow eyes, stare into the deep
How does the light of day do this all to me
It's not a conscious choice it's only meant to be
And how do the daffodils wash me all away
All the magic in the world, by the light of day

And then at nighttime you're wild, on the loose
The moon illuminates the breaking of the truce
You flit from shadow to shadow, the sting of chilly air
The daffodils glow ghostly white, a scene beyond compare

How could you prefer the starkness of the day
To slinking graceful through the night, stalking waiting prey
The sun won't rise for hours yet, you've time alone at last
Followed by your silhouette, you run into the vast

And in the daytime sunlight streams across your face
The wildness is beaten back, you're warm and half awake
And to the daylight you offer silent prayer
The daffodils hear your words, they turn around and stare
How do the daffodils wash me all away
All the magic in the world, by the light of day
And how do the daffodils wash me all away
All the magic in the world, by the light of day
