His Return
He went silent for a while,
Picking up balls of dirt between his fingers
And crushing them.
Then he said, "and I heard something."
"What do you mean?"
His face had changed.
I looked at him but he said nothing.
"Inside of him."
"His heart?"
"No. It was like this," he said,
Looking up to the sky all of a sudden
Like he had seen a bird, but he didn't do anything.
He even stopped rubbing the dirt.
I felt Qwsh's head turning from him to me,
But I was looking very closely at Adem.
His dark eyes were alive without moving much at all.
I couldn't tell if he was happy or sad
But I thought he looked beautiful.
"It's hard. Let me think how to put this," he said.
And his eyes went glassy
And tears ran down his face.
