The Sailor

I took his money and I left him his home
I had to get going and he had to grow old
I should have known that he was all I'd ever be
But I would not believe

The sailor lives by the shore
A life full of water, and he wanted more
Now he can't tell between the end of the glass
And what his years have passed

The sailor looks back on his life and he says I'm still a man
A life lived like a sacrifice no one can understand
I look upon his sunken face and I see the damage done
And in that way I guess I'd say I am the sailor's son
I am the sailor's son

What was his is now mine
Everything will fade if you give enough time
So when I woke from a prayer
Why did I see him there

The sailor looks back on his life and he says I'm still a man
A life lived like a sacrifice no one can understand
I look upon his sunken face and I see the damage done
And in that way I guess I'd say I am the sailor's son
I am the sailor's son

Is this the way it feels
When mem'ries become dreams after so many years
But what I never asked before
Is why I closed the door

The sailor looks back on his life and he says I'm still a man
A life lived like a sacrifice no one can understand
I look upon his sunken face and I see the damage done
And in that way I guess I'd say I am the sailor's son
I am the sailor's son
