To Mars

Far from our own world that we know so well
There is a land beyond the Mercury
As watch ships that leave, we walk on shells
We know they shan't again see bush or tree
When people stop and watch it go away
They all, most likely, stop and give it mind
The trail they leave behind them leads the way
From a world that they all do leave behind
I feel bad for those aboard those ships
They all know for sure they never shall return
They speak to Ground Control with trembling lips
The countdown done, the fuel begins to burn
So sad, but I am glad to have you here
We watch them pull away beside the pier

Our world is such a wondrous place, I know
I only wish that they would follow me
Yet, some, they feel that they must surely go
And they cannot, or will not, come to see
Our world, it is full of so wondrous things
The moon and sun look down upon us
Sometimes I wish that we could all have wings
To look from the sky 'till eyes filled with dust
Our world we must cherish and protect
The mountains, forests, earth, and trees abound
The creatures here shan't fail with neglect
With conscientious humans all around
With hope, I watch them, glad to have you here
We watch them pull away, beside the pier
