The Day It Rained

It rained the day she left me, and it rained the whole day through
Searched my home for a single light, and it was then that I knew
The rain was her final parting gift, to help the flowers grow
And it shook my world when I thought how I might never see her home

It rained the day she left for truth in search of an open sea
I clung on to my shield and vows that only serviced me
And when my shield was splintered and my vows were rent in twain
I saw only my shadow reflected on my pain

It rained the day a soldier cried, and it rained the whole day through
She placed her wisdom in her sword and handed it to you
But you melted it and poured it
Left your soul as selfish as the night
And you waited upon the isles
Thinking what you wronged would be set right

But did it rain the day you confessed her name to an empty trail
Did it rain the day you searched for a way to set your sail
You knew the rain was her parting gift to help the flowers grow
And you stitched your shield and vows in hopes to see again her home
