The God Men

The god men came on wooden ships
They bore gifts -- blankets, horses, rum
They brought chains
For the body and spirit
Divided brother against brother
Mother against daughter
What they could not steal they took
By the sword and cross
We like to remember our forebears defying the god men
But there were precious few
Chains -- many wore willingly
They became treasures passed down to children
Along with wishes
That they too
Would become
God men

The god men's wooden ships turned to steel
Then they took flight
The sword and cross gave way to moving pictures
The gifts became riches made with our blood and treasure
They learned to use us to pillage our own lands
The god men have left their stain
We have their blood beneath our skins
Yet we are not their equals
They speak contrition but do not show it
They speak peace with warm gun still in hand
But we do not see our doom
We only wish
To be
The god men
