Keep You Upright

My temporary brothers were so entwined with me
But now they're only part of what my life was like before
I want to look back, they brought me so far round
But I don't fit their hands anymore

Later, on reclaimed recliners, friends were family
Sprawled out in the hallway shielding punches day by day
But now it's over, and everyone moved out
And now we can't resist the drift away

Like all who used to keep you upright
Just too many to keep them all in sight
And though it's sad that you might lose them for a year or for good
You'll never lose their impact on your life

A part of me and history, I know they'll turn out fine
Landing jobs and moving on, I see it all online
Those hands on the wheel helped shape the path I took
Now it's time to turn the page or even close the book

But any way I slice it, it'll never be the same
I need to find another fuel to reignite my flame
It's hard to know the good days when they're showing you their face
For all the chaos this life brings, some things will never change

Like all who used to keep you upright
Just too many to keep them all in sight
And though it's sad that you might lose them for a year or for good
You'll never lose their impact on your life

When has it been too long to wind back time
When have you missed so much, it's more work than it's worth
It takes so much to keep from slipping there, so be aware
All but a few will get to far to rewind

Like all who used to keep you upright
Just too many to keep them all in sight
And though it's sad that you might lose them for a year or for good
You'll never lose their impact on your life
