Poem for Him

My heart is weary now
of being in pieces
Only to find poetry where a future should be

I try to tell her

One day
I'll write a poem for a man who will choose to stick around
long enough for the pages to fill the rest of our lives

He will not be content with mere stanzas on parchment

He will want the whole of me

Taste the metaphor of my grief
& understand why I love so hard

The allegory of me won't be enough
He will want to hold the prose I've penned
in his own palms

He will not merely applaud the idea of me
He will walk past the stage & lights
find the woman backstage beautiful,

He will be the only audience to give me stage fright
his opinion will matter more than a stadium of critics
He will desire to be more than my muse

More than the object of my pen
He will want to be one
Until we are both the poet & the poem

Love
Has made a fool of me
Time & time again
But the wind always outlives the mountain
