We All Fall

Layla's outside sleeping in the center of the lawn
Dreaming in the sunlight till the afternoon is gone
The windows are open and the warm wind wanders through
All the boring people claim they got nothing to do
I'm out on the front steps of this undemanding town
I've been thinking it won't be too long till we all fall down

My bedroom was my sanctum then, my own teenage creation
Starlit skies, I love you lies, lost in cross ventilation
Tiptoe up the late night stairs, do not make a sound
It cannot be all that bad if it comes from the ground

Forgetting it won't be too long until we all fall down

The neighbor's tree is rotting now, her branches hit the wires
Soon the boss will call her in and force her to retire
Out the window on this street the neighborhood looks bare
All I see are images of kids no longer there
The circles on her severed trunk track her years in the ground
