Effigies

Where does the moment go that you have witnessed?
Where does the moment go that you have seen?
I found it in my life as a rambler
Burning in an effigy of trees

The shadow boxing spirit of my childhood
Had all but grown old and cold and bare
But then the tears fell like embers
From those effigies burning everywhere

There's no chains upon the ocean
For its blue will surpass any line
It's you, I still come to
Beneath the million burning effigies of time

I had tamed perhaps in vain my true compassion
My faith withered wildly on the vine
When everyone you meet, takes a little piece
Soon enough there's nothing left behind

But so came the morning
Like the dawning of all time
And there were you, my great defender
Those effigies burning in your eyes

Now the trees are bleedin yellow in the twilight
As the horizon snakes its way across my sight
There's a red dirt road headed nowhere
and a desert bird perched right on my soul

Broader than the cosmos
You are now all sight and all sound
Here am I, gratefully wounded
As your effigy is scattered on the ground
Here am I, woundedly grateful
As your effigy is scattered all around
