The Flat Red Earth

The sun that scalds my freckled skin
Could never put life back within
My brain is bouncing in its skull
Free of the thoughts that made it dull
Now the trees feed on my body
Their roots pull me apart like bread
I do not care, not asleep there
Just dead, dead, dead

I listen to the falling rain
It's all I've got to keep me sane
It wets the ground to my surprise
It opens up these tired eyes
Like a seed you planted me
Here I lie inside your head
Even though we both know
I'm dead, dead, dead

All those people we once knew
Are queuing up to support you
They're offering a helping hand
But they do not understand
The prayers they said were to themselves
While beneath the earth so red
Yet I stay held by the clay
Still dead, dead, dead
