The Field

I swept all the pain
I threw it out the front door
And I watched the birds pick it up piece by piece
And scatter it like seeds

And as each flower bloomed
With a different shade of heartache
I opened up the fields for all to see and all to feel
And they came in droves

The tourists kept swarming
The meadow kept growing,
Nourished by the weight of every life that came to stay
The birds kept on crowing
The tears kept on flowing
And every drop from every face, a rose would grow back in its place

Then snow came and went
A feathery blanket
And the birds packed their bags as the leaves began to sag
And shiver

The guests disappeared
With the sun and the color
And with each frozen breath, I felt stiller than I ever felt
And ever will

The music kept playing
Acoustic and waning
Each note a shooting star amongst a galaxy of hearts
And inside the cabin
The leaves kept on dragging
The life away from what I had to say
On every page of every day
