Anything to Get to Sleep
If she wanted away from the wheel
She knew she'd have to climb
There were leaves on the dash
And blood with the glass
The windshield knocked inside
She'd been drinking far too long
But not too long to not do the math
Just one long breath to the wrong Crown Vic
Would get her bail she didn't have
But the car wasn't hers and no one saw
So she ran
But up the road was a bar with no windows
Where she hadn't been seen in weeks
She hid her face in the hallway
And came up clean from the sink
There was a man on a stool in a coat with no sleeves
And a full drink in each hand
And it looked through the smoke that
He'd part with the spare
If she would trade a dance
Sometimes you only get the one chance
The wrecker outside
She'd never see
Anything to get to sleep
Anything to get to sleep
Anything to get to sleep
Last call brings out the lights
So she asked him for a ride
He nearly fell
Half-down the stairwell
But at least she lived nearby
On the drive she lied that her car had died
But walking kept her in line
She told the truth, she'd move before the rent was due
Two months is too far behind
That's when she saw the pistol he'd been keeping at his side
He ran a light with her house in sight
And took a right into a package store
She reached out a 5 as he stumbled outside
But he just slammed the door
It was 10 'til close when the streetlights froze
With the sound of a shout and a shot
Only seconds passed and he was back on the gas
And they peeled out the parking lot
He said, "I got debts of my own, babe
Don't touch the locks."
Keep still and keep quiet
In the passenger seat
And you might get to sleep
Anything to get to sleep
Anything to get to sleep
He hit 2 Chevron at 3
And a Marathon at 4
A grand in the bag behind the driver's seat
And 2 cold bodies more
From the passenger's side she would sit up straight
And hold her breath when he stepped on the brakes
And try to look sober enough to pray
To wake up far from a cell or a grave
'Cause they know you too well when they know you're afraid
One last stop until the sun
One last bullet in a gun
But he walked into a shootout at an all-night diner
And they wouldn't let him run
She watched him fall through the glass
One look at the money bag
Just a glance
And she was running home in the gray light
Only scratches in her hands
Sometimes you only get the one chance
If only tonight
Breathing free
Anything to get to sleep
Anything to get to sleep
Anything to get to sleep
She knew she'd have to climb
There were leaves on the dash
And blood with the glass
The windshield knocked inside
She'd been drinking far too long
But not too long to not do the math
