Under the Loop

Under the Loop in old Chicago
I saw this girl, whole lot of bravado
She was walking on Wabash the L train above her head
She was very convincing, the best view I ever had

I followed her to Madison street
She got a takeaway at the Sweetgreen, so sweet
Then suddenly she turned around and saw me looking
'Do you want a bite of this extremely good cooking'

I said no, just had me some deep dish
I ain't looking for food, I'm looking for you
She said 'that's alright but I don't need a man
And a stalker is not what I need at all'

I couldn't resist, my feet kept on going
The same rhythm I heard, at the house of blues
And then a train above made a sudden metallic screech
Just when I said 'I love...' she was out of reach
I tried to repeat what I thought I had to tell her
But she looked the other way and never heard a word

This story ends where it started
Under the Loop where we parted
Tried to explain to myself what I thought had happened
But I couldn't make sense of her presence anyhow

Then I saw her again, illuminated
'I'm this city', she explained to me

I am Chicago, I am the streets
I am the train I am the towers
I am the blues I am the food
I am the people I am Chicago
And I love you, I love you
