Why Do We Need Em

I used to draw 'em on my jeans when I was 13
Sign 'em by my name on every note
Gave half of mine away when I was 17
Got the other halfback half broke
I thought nothing ever hurt me like the first time
But the second was twice as bad
They're fragile and fickle and constantly leaving me sad

Why do we need 'em?
Tell me what good do they do
When they spend more time breaking than beating?
What would it hurt me if I never had to feel the fall?
If a heart is essential, then why is love difficult?
Why do we need 'em at all?

Why, why, why, why do we need 'em?
Why do we need 'em?

Why didn't God make 'em indestructible?
Or at least a little tougher than they are?
I wish it didn't come with a memory
Of every single time they fell apart
Maybe I wouldn't mind having one
If I could decide what it does
What it could feel and how quickly it heals
When it's not moving on

Why do we need 'em?
Tell me what good do they do
When they spend more time breaking than beating?
What would it hurt me if I never had to feel the fall?
If a heart is essential, then why is love difficult?
Tell me, why do we need 'em at all?

Why, why, why, why do we need 'em at all?

Why didn't God make 'em indestructible?
Or at least a little tougher than they are?
I wish it didn't come with a memory (a memory)
Of every single time they fell apart
I thought nothing ever hurt me like the first time (the first time)
But the second was twice as bad
They're fragile and fickle and constantly leaving me sad

Why do we need 'em?
Tell me what good do they do
When they spend more time breaking than beating?
What would it hurt me if I never had to feel the fall?
If a heart is essential, then why is love difficult?
Tell me, why do we need 'em at all?

Why, why, why, why do we need 'em?
Why do we need 'em?

Why do we need 'em at all?
