To You, My Promise

At times I've wondered if planetary paths
Could have ever kept us apart
But I've often dreamt of apocalypses
On rooftops where we lifted our eyes to watch eclipses
Constellations join us as silent observers
To the painfully slow tilt of the stars
And patterns fixed by eternal preservers
Then the moon descended down
Falling comet tails burned bright
Our lives ended while illuminated in pale light
Until then, it burns above me, every night
And somewhere between all that was a void
The empty space between us
And celestial mechanics unfolding thousands of miles away
And the empty space between just us
A distance growing, steadily
Rotating like the sphere of tiny pinholes of light above us
And I'd replace every moment, readily
Each time the moon aligns and eclipses
Wanes and waxes
The space between expands
But is still connected
Never to be severed
If I could, I'd trace back our orbits
To untangle the filaments that kept us together
To unravel every timeline that once held purpose
And burn through every earthly tether
Until only the gravity of the moon pulls upon us
Forever I owe this to you, my promise
