Princess Pattern

The cowboy broke a tea set when he woke and saw a ghost in the corner
Shot at the shadow and the Princess Pattern
Was shattered beyond salvage
The cowboy was in love with the woman
Whose precious keepsake he shot in vain
And no apology would erase the damage he had done
She would never see that cowboy again, not while he was alive
It was the last chance he had to make an impression

He hung his head as he bid farewell
And he knew he would never win the woman of his dreams
Not with her long litany of good reasons not to love him
The next day at dawn in a catalog full of fine tea sets
He had to find the one with a royal crest
Amid blue porcelain flowers and lace
He would never see that woman again, not while he was alive
This was the last chance he had to make amends

After breakfast he tore out a page, and gave it to a friend
With a request that he send for a replacement
Addressed to the woman he had wronged
The friend said "will do"
Then the cowboy left for his rendezvous with three acquaintances
The skinny one said "welcome to the ambush"
The cowboy had too many enemies for that small town
He could not keep his head down, or his mouth shut

Outgunned three to one, he ran into a church
With a bullet in his chest
Seeking shelter from behind the crucifix
The cowboy got all three before he died
So ends the story, the congregation took up a collection
Which they gave to the woman they thought must have loved him
Which she declined, and she denied
Six weeks later she received the replacement tea set
With the perfect Princess Pattern

Seems the cowboy had finally done something right
Seems the cowboy had finally done something right
Seems the cowboy had finally done something right
Seems the cowboy had finally done something right
