Sunshine State Death Row

Well I grew up on this here orange grove
For the better part of my life
I've known the sheriff since we were kids And he still drops by to this day with his wife For dinner on Sunday nights
And like any good friend should
He turns his head when times get a little bit tight
And I'd grow a little green cash crop on the side
So he says old friend that's a dangerous business
One that will undo you
But don't you worry, I'll let you run
If that day ever comes true
Then a couple of harvests on down the road
He comes knocking on my back door
He says we've found two lost souls on your south forty and
We can't come up with a reason to convince the judge that they're not yours

So I made a good run
Down ole Rattlesnake Hammock Road
Now all this darkness it surrounds me
I'm sittin' on this sunshine state death row

Now, I won't lie and say some of the fondest memories of my young life
Won't be sitting there playing cards
With the warden and his men on Friday nights
They try to ease my pain by saying that we're all gonna go someday
You just have the luxury of knowing how, when and why
And the warden asks Son
Have you given it any real thought as to the
Contents of your last meal
I said I'd rather be out on the flats catching it myself
But a snook outside the slot might just sweeten this whole damned deal

So I made a good run
Down ole Rattlesnake Hammock Road
Now all this darkness it surrounds me
I'm sittin' on this sunshine state death row

Well now the 'cane it's a thundering in
And Mother Nature I guess is
The only one willing to grant me
A stay of execution
Now the lights go out and the sirens wail
And under the guise of night, the warden unlocks my cell
He says Son, I've been doing this long enough to know
That you gotta take justice in your own two
Hands sometimes
We know you weren't the one that committed these crimes
So, go on, don't be a fool
And don't get caught this time
Make your getaway
Our friend the sheriff is waiting
For you out in the 'glades

So I made a good run
Down ole Rattlesnake Hammock Road
Now all this darkness it's behind me
I'm on a go fast boat on my way to Mexico
