When I was a young child, my father said to me
To always persevere and try my best and that's the key
And often in my younger years I'd think of him and smile
'Cause I was failing miserably and trying all the while

And I tried all the sports
Track and field and courts
But the most I ever won was most improved

When I was a senior, on junior varsity
My favorite coach pulled me aside to cut me from the team
She said "Kid, I see you're trying, but you just don't get it done
And when you're causing losses it's depressing everyone"

I finally realized
It's not about who tries
If you're losing everything there is to lose
I said there's got to be some way
I'd do anything to stay
She said "Kid, there's only one thing you could do"

I play this song for folks and they say I'm insensitive
To which I say it's not my fault we've got one life to live
If you like being garbage, that's an option you've still got

When people need life advice, I know just what to say
Most people's problem is they're bad or just okay
And yes, some folks have issues, real obstacles to face
